About Me

My name is Sarah Good and I am an aspiring elementary special education teacher. I’ve lived in Iowa, Florida, Colorado, Utah, and now I am currently residing in Indiana. Living in so many different states has allowed me to experience different cultures and diverse people. I am very excited to use this experience in my classroom to better understand and teach children through a multicultural perspective. Living in Colorado was pivotal in my journey to discovering my passion as an educator. I took a class for several years in high school where I was a helper in a special education classroom. There were a variety of learners from mild to severe needs. I connected with the teacher and her and I are still friends to this day. She began to teach me about different disabilities and what her role as a teacher was and I fell in love with the kids.

I think I’ve been graced with patience and an empathetic heart and always felt a strong pull to be around these kids, to love, and care for them. I started as an elementary education major at a school called Dixie State University in Utah. I played softball for the school for a few years and when my family moved from Colorado to Indiana I followed not long after to attend IU for special education. I am overjoyed with this decision and the career I have in front of me.

Technology

Since these kids are all digital natives it’s very important to include technology in my instruction. I want to integrate technology in my classroom not idolize it. Especially as an educator in a world where technology could easily accomplish most tasks. This can be detrimental to children if a focus is clearly on technology, they can be deprived of social skills, communication, and modeling. With that said technology should be integrated. There are amazing technological tools and resources that help with adaptive skills. Whether it’s using a smartboard to help with fine or gross motor skills, an iPad that applies a colored lens over text, or an audio app that reads text aloud. Technology will always have a purpose in my classroom whether its efficient, effective, engaging, or enhancing.

Pedagogical Beliefs

My pedagogical beliefs are that students can learn in very different ways and in special education it can be greatly enhanced.  The learning styles are visual, audio, reading/writing, and kinesthetic. I want to adapt my teaching to help students discover their “learning language”.  It’s important to differentiate my teaching so that the maximum learning potential can be reached by all students.

People learn at different levels and paces and my job is to be fully invested and encouraging to every student no matter where they are at. I want this to be a positive learning experience where nobody feels “dumb” or “stupid”. We learn by thinking and asking questions and nobody should be shamed for pursuing that.I think that making connections from their past experiences, interests, and culture can be very helpful for kids to produce new knowledge. I will modify my teaching and curriculum depending on the students IEP and will do my best to do everything I can to help them reach their goals.
